Life and Love - "No More Arm Rings or Silver"

The Last Kingdom is my latest binge on Netflix. Not only is it a historical TV series, which is my favorite genre, but there are a number of male characters in the show that are gorgeous. In essence, by watching I regularly kill two birds with one stone.

The script writers of this show have done such a good job of incorporating bits of wisdom that apply to leading a smart life for any century. Most recently, I voted down the following quote:

"I will speak to her and give you a decision.... (until then) no more arm ring or silver."

This quote is from an exchange between two characters over the possibility of the one (who is in the service of the other) marrying a woman that he loves who is a prostitute. There is a question of legitimacy and whether or not the woman is in "it" for the money/silver that has been provided.

"No More Arm Rings or Silver."

In order to figure out this dilemma of love and appropriateness, the advice is given to pretty much stop giving money/material objects out to this love interest until another person of influence can be brought in to give perspective.

How applicable is this to the here and now! How often do we romantics make the choice to give and give... and give when the giving should be over.

There is nothing wrong with showering the one we adore with gifts of silver and trinkets, but when the one that we are giving to is not returning our adoration in any form there is a problem. A big red flag. And sometimes, the best way to see that the red is red and not orange, is to bring into the situation someone you love and respect to give you fair and wise council. Someone that can share their perspective with you in a way that leaves your pride intact and your heart only slightly bruised.
